Free ferry ride across the Yukon river (in winter, they drive across) |
We ride across the Yukon river on the free ferry and the current is very
strong in this river. In the winter, they drive across the frozen river in
their cars and trucks. (Sounds pretty cold to me) |
The mighty Yukon River |
Since it is still daylight we do a small tour of the town, this is really
where the Klondike gold rush happened, folks, the Yukon and Klondike rivers
come together at this small town of Dawson City. Remember the old radio
program Sergeant Preston of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and his
adventures around places like Whitehorse, Dawson, Skagway, etc? I can hear
it now "On King! Mush, you huskies!"
(Yeah, I could have just said confluence, but didn't want everyone
scrambling for their dictionary) |
The big three in front of the Big Slide |
We stop at a local convenience store for a microwave sandwich supper and
then return to the White Ram for some sleep even though it is still
daylight. Total flying time from Ft. Nelson to Dawson is 7.1 hours. |
Monument to the Gold rush days |
At the time I took this photo, I thought I WAS close enough that you
could read it! I think the words and plaque deal with the struggles that
were encountered when crossing Chilcoot pass to get to Dawson City. |
